We have prototyped a feature based on a niche request to add functionality similar to OBS line functionality offered by another product. We have put this feature under a new category of "Advanced Tools" which (for simplicity) do not appear in the user interface unless the user has explicitly opted in to them. To enable access to the tool, scroll down to the bottom of the Navigation Options screen where there is a switch.
Track Radial is similar to Track Waypoint in that it appears in the What's Here menu for a waypoint on the map. When you select Track Radial you are prompted to enter the radial you are interested in, then when you press Done the feature activates. Just like the existing Track Waypoint feature the distance and bearings to and from the selected waypoint are then displayed in the Position instrument at the top of the screen. However in addition to this, the HSI enters an OBS mode where you can see your cross-track error relative to the radial you have selected, and easily intercept it if that's your goal.
We would like feedback as to how this feature works in the prototype (beta). Is the horizontal cross-track error scale correct? At the moment we've got one dot equals one nautical mile, but some drop pilots have indicated that 0.1 nautical mile might be better. Also, what should the bug on the HSI do when it's in OBS mode? In the prototype it shows the radial you have entered, whereas we could leave it to do what it did before: point to your next route waypoint.
Just like Track Waypoint, to turn off the feature, simply tap in the Position instrument and everything returns to normal.

Nice Feature!
Re the bug on the HSI, as the SD  HSI doesn't display the normal HSI top and tail, I think you need some reference to what has been selected, so it should be as present. Alternatively implement HSI top and tail, displaying trk selected or trk per route if no other trk selected.(I know it already does that, but its not particularly clear without top and tail, the bug could then point to waypoint)
Re the Scale, it depends on what you are trying to do with it, no doubt someone will request adjustable!....maybe 0.2 as a compromise?

Thanks

Pete

Regarding the scale for the CDI: why not do it like in an old fashioned VOR? Its deflection is proportional to the angular position error. Hence it is less sensitive when you're far away and more sensitive near by.

Because often people want to use this feature on a waypoint that is not a VOR, and one of the most common use cases appears to be parachute dropping where the pilot wants to fly a precise distance one side of the centreline.

Tim,

I have a couple of observations shown below (Nexus 7 tablet):

1) Some menu items are showing as hyperlinks:

2) The 'From' radial is showing up as 000'M

Think the term radial (in the menu) would be better named OBS as that is what it does, radial implies a QDR.
The keyboard which pops up sometimes obscures the entry box.

Thanks all. The hyperlinks are not accidental!

Ideally I would call the feature "Track Bearing to/from Waypoint" but that's too long, especially after translation. Just having "OBS" isn't discoverable enough for people who might want the feature but don't know what OBS means in this context.

Would QDR and QDM do as labales?

I might be less clever than the average pilot but when I passed my test (and even now) I had no idea what those meant. I craved plain English.

The feature has been slightly updated in today's beta so that the selected radial (and its opposite) are explicitly mentioned onscreen, and they are drawn with different colours to aid identification on the map.
